Ayla Schafer, Ima Adama

by August 20, 2018

Ayla Schafer is a multi-lingual ‘world folk’ singer-songwriter. Her lyrics and music offer poetic influences of traditional folk music and tribal flavoring from South and North America.  Schafer is tuned into the indigenous traditions and healing power of music. In 2017, Schafer co-produced and released her debut Album Dive Into Water. The album featured her angelic voice surrounded by intimate soundscapes of an eclectic array of instruments and styles. The track ‘Vuela con el Viento’ has been broadcast globally with over 3,000,000 listens on YouTube.

About the Album

Schafer has released a collection of live, acoustic and experimental songs as an offering of love and gratitude called, Ima Adama, which means Mother Earth. Schafer states, “I felt moved to make a step to give more through my music as an offering and prayer to take care of our Earth, home and Mother. This is me taking my heart prayer into action towards taking care of that which matters to me.” 25% of all proceeds will go towards the ‘Pachamama Alliance,’ an organization which is weaving indigenous wisdom and modern knowledge for a thriving and sustainable future, working directly with indigenous peoples of the Amazon Jungle to protect their wisdom and the Forest. The ten selections are rapturous, sincere and mostly feature guitar and Schafer’s pure voice.

Our Favorite Track

Our favorite track is “Silent Voices.” The acoustic guitar intro has elements of tribal poly-rhythms and South American colors. Schafer’s lyrics are passionate and full of emotions that make the listener believe that she means what she is singing about. Her voice floats of the multi-layered guitar part. The song structure is interesting and flows seamlessly through various sections. The song evolves, and Schafer’s strumming pattern builds energy, while still maintaining the tribal character and rhythm. Her voice ascends as she builds the song to a climax and then releases the energy with a quiet interlude. The verse is stunning and lyrically poetic. Even though the track is sparse with guitar and voice only, there is a lot of layers and subtleties in the music, the result is beautiful.

In Conclusion

Ima Adama is a collection of live tunes from Schafer that allows the listener to experience the energy and love that she creates within her live performances. The songs are varied, and all have rich songwriting and angelic singing. The wisdom of Mother Earth is clearly channeling through Schafer, and just as our mother is, this music is also stunning.
